While Dr. Sala acknowledged that the immediate threat of quantum attacks may not be imminent, he stressed that the potential for such attacks to materialize in the future is significant enough to warrant immediate action. Quantum computers, once fully developed, will have the ability to solve complex problems that classical computers cannot efficiently handle, which directly undermines the cryptographic algorithms currently used to protect digital signatures.

Researchers at the University of Sussex have estimated that a quantum computer with 30 million to 300 million physical qubits could potentially break the Bitcoin blockchain. While current quantum computers have only 50-100 qubits, advancements in quantum technology could lower the requirements for such an attack.
