In a recent update, we discussed the introduction of a Digital Product Passport by the IOTA Foundation as part of its work for the European Blockchain Pre-Commercial Procurement funded by the European Commission. According to that report, two pre-commercial applications for DPPs were developed, each focusing on different circular economy scenarios while using blockchain technology for data traceability and auditability.

Fast-forward, this groundbreaking initiative took centre stage at the recent Incubation Forum for Circular Economy in European Defence (IF CEED), which was managed by the European Defence Agency (EDA). As disclosed by the EDA in a blog post, a project dubbed “IOTA 2” has successfully been executed to define the “requirements for a defence Digital Product Passport (DPP) for body armour.”

According to the report shared by co-founder Dominik Schiener, the implementation of the DPP concept in the military is meant to transform operations by ensuring that traceability, product authenticity, and stock management are significantly improved.

What is DPP?
The Digital Product Passport was designed as a data-sharing system to support the circularity of products. Per our research, this is done by sharing relevant information in the supply chain while avoiding unwanted disclosure. Fascinatingly, its use in the military environment has been found to include the improvement of interoperability across functions such as procurement, maintenance, logistics as well as countries.

An excerpt of the EDA post reads:

It consists of several components: a unique persistent identifier for the product, a persistent data carrier (physical marking and/or device), a digital connector between the physical product and the digital place of information on the product, and, finally, an IT architecture facilitating the data exchange securely. Depending on the product type, different data can be included in the DPP.

More on the IOTA 2.0 Project
While the IOTA 2 project is said to have no relationship with the IOTA Foundation, it is reported to have an interesting discovery and application.

According to EDA, the project successfully defined the needed contents for body armour vests. Based on the results, 74 data attributes were reported indefinitely. Fascinatingly, this included information on roles in the supply chain, classification, level of reporting, and compatibility with existing standards.

Additionally, the options for the identification of the body armour vest were analyzed through the evaluation of the relevant different standards for item unique identification and the performance of initial tests of marking technologies. Most importantly, the results produced a recommendation on the IT architecture that is meant to be used to manage the data. Also, this will be done depending on the needs of the Ministries of Defence and defence companies.

Amidst the backdrop of this initiative, IOTA is reported to have also introduced a secure Know-Your-Customer solution for Decentralized Finance (DeFi) applications. As mentioned in our previous report, this is to enable the authentication of user identities without disclosing personal information.

Also, IOTA has introduced a prototype solution to leverage distributed ledger technology to solve issues related to transparency and payment, according to our recent coverage.
